Basil essential oil alleviates anxiety and aids concentration and is prized in Ayurvedic medicine for its ability to strengthen compassion, faith and bring clarity. It is an excellent tonic for the nerves. It calms down the nerves yet improves our ability to concentrate. I have used it extensively for studying for exams – simply put a few drops in an oil burner or on a tissue.Basil can also be used to clear the sinuses. Use it as an inhalant to clear away catarrh or use 3 drops to 10 mls (2 teaspoons of carrier oil) as an effective chest rub.
Basil is also ideal for the digestive system – no wonder it is used so much for cooking! For pains in the abdomen I find a compress of Basil invaluable. Fill a small bowl with warm water, add a few drops of Basil, soak a flannel in this aromatic water and place on the abdomen. You can also use 3 drops of Basil to 10mls (2 teaspoons) carrier oil as a tummy rub. If your tummy feels really irritated, painful and/or bloated then try I drop basil, I drop of Chamomile and 1 drop Peppermint.
On a spiritual level Basil can be used to heighten the intuition and promote confidence in our intuition.
